National Safeguarding Adults Week (NSAW) is a time when organisations come together to raise awareness of important safeguarding issues.
We believe that working in partnerships allows us to share our knowledge of safeguarding, learn from others, and work towards creating safer cultures.
The campaign is led by Ann Craft Trust and the overarching theme this year is “Every Voice. Every Choice“.
During this year’s event, we’ll be collaborating with our partners to explore a different safeguarding theme each day.

About the Session
Some of the most complex safeguarding decisions arise when adults choose to live in circumstances that place them at significant risk. These situations regularly feature in Safeguarding Adults Reviews and often raise challenging questions about autonomy, intervention, risk, and the application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
This practical and engaging session will explore:
- Learning from Safeguarding Adults Reviews and recurring mental capacity themes.
- Hoarding, self-neglect and refusals of support.
- Conducting robust and legally defensible mental capacity assessments.
- Understanding executive functioning and complex decision-making.
- Capacity and consent within safeguarding processes.
- Best interests decision-making.
- The Court of Protection, inherent jurisdiction and available legal powers where significant risks remain.
- Practical scenarios and case discussions throughout the day.

About the Speaker
Neil Allen is a nationally recognised expert in mental capacity, mental health and safeguarding law. He is a Barrister at 39 Essex Chambers and has extensive experience in Court of Protection practice. His sessions are widely recognised for combining legal expertise with practical application to frontline safeguarding practice.

About the Session
Delivered by The Children’s Society, this session will primarily focus on transitional safeguarding and how we can prevent exploitation as children transition into adulthood. The session will seek to reframe narratives and approaches to victimhood in relation to older children and young adults who experience exploitation – and to overcome bias, discrimination and siloed working to ensure all victims are recognised and receive appropriate support. It will also touch on appropriate language and how the language we use when talking about children and young people who are victims of exploitation and abuse can shape perceptions, responses and safeguarding outcomes.

About the Session
In this collaborative learning event held by Bromley Safeguarding Adults Board, practitioners will explore learning arising from a complex safeguarding case (Fred), with a thematic focus on hospital discharge, multi-agency communication, care coordination and safeguarding at the end of life. This is an opportunity for professionals to come together in a reflective space, strengthen partnership working and improve outcomes for adults with complex health and care needs.

As part of Safeguarding Adults Week, The Partners in Care and Health Adult Safeguarding Team is hosting this webinar to launch the Discriminatory Abuse Practice Toolkit developed by Karl Mason. Karl will introduce the toolkit and the components of good practice in addressing discriminatory abuse. This includes understanding what discriminatory abuse entails, knowing how to identify it, holding sensitive and person-centred discussions with those affected, and considering the organisational support required. Helen Rose and Rob Studzinski will then discuss the impact of this work at North Lincolnshire Council and Bradford City Council.
Attendees will gain an understanding of how recognising and addressing discriminatory abuse can support individuals and help practitioners articulate how identity and protected characteristics are relevant to safeguarding adults. They will also hear about the difference the approach has made in practice. The resource will be shared as an open-access toolkit to strengthen practice in this area.
