There are 11 million adult victim survivors of sexual abuse, however many people will never share their story and will continue to suffer in silence.
Trauma symptoms and survival strategies can be overlooked, misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Those who have already suffered more than enough are the ones who have to be the bravest and speak out and this can be just to hard. Talking about sex in society today carries stigma and shame and it remains for many a taboo subject. As professionals supporting adults we can often shy away from engaging in brave conversations as we worry we “will make matters worse”, “we haven’t got the right skills” or “we are not specialist enough”. Victim/survivors just want human kindness, care and compassion.
Together we will explore the personal and societal barriers in talking about sex and how we can build our courage and resilience through relational practice to help people tell their story to prevent further suffering.
This workshop will be facilitated by Sarah Pritchard, Development Manager of the Cleveland Sexual Harms Network.
