Legal Literacy for Safeguarding Adults (2 Day Course) – 15th & 16th November 2018

Yo is a trainer and consultant who works across the public sector (primarily in social care and education) with specialisms in autism and law. She is experienced in working closely with professionals in local authorities, care providers and in schools. She creates and delivers high level training on the legal framework of adult social care, safeguarding and autism for many English local authorities and other clients, including sector organisations such as OPG and ADASS. Yo provides training on all aspects of the Care Act; Adult Safeguarding law and practice; Mental Capacity law; DOLS; SEND law; and specialist autism courses for social care and education professionals. She has a thorough and up to date working knowledge of public law and professional practice issues in both adult and children’s services and a multi-faceted perspective on a range of issues affecting all client groups, but particularly autistics both with and without intellectual disabilities.


To develop a clear understanding of the source and limits of legal powers around: capacity, consent, home entry, removal, detention and deprivation of liberty in a range of settings; and how to fulfil the enquiry duty in the context of issues of capacity, refusal of assessment and risk to self or others. This course will help you to understand the impact of Human Rights, Mental Capacity and Data Protection law.

Day 1

  • The legal basis of Safeguarding interventions focussing on Enquiries, Proportionality and issues around Mental Capacity
  • Legal options in particular situations
  • Working with adults and across agencies to manage risk in complex situations (includes MSP and information sharing and confidentiality)
  • Practical application of complex scenarios

Day 2

  • Working with adults to manage risk in complex situations (includes MSP and Self-Neglect)
  • Working across agencies to Safeguard Adults (includes information sharing, decision making and accountability)
  • Refresher on legal options in particular situations
  • Practical application of complex scenarios

Requesting a Place

If you would like to request a place, please complete the form below by Monday 11th June 2018. One form per person is required. Please note that submitting a form does not guarantee a place, however we suggest that you provisionally book these dates in your diary. These training sessions are usually oversubscribed and therefore allocation of places will be determined on a number of factors. Please ensure that you provide as much detail as possible on the ‘why you want to attend’ section of the form.

We will send confirmation of your place by Monday 18th June 2018. If you are unsuccessful you will be informed and your name will be added to a reserve list.

Charging Policy for Non-Attendance

This course is free to attend, however if your place is confirmed and you are unable to attend you must inform the Business Unit by 11.30pm on Wednesday 7th November 2018. Cancellation after this date or failure to attend either day will result in a £50 per day charge.
