Completing a Section 42 Enquiry – Level 1

Nikki is a trainer and social work consultant who works across the public sector with specialisms in Safeguarding Adults, Mental Capacity and Mental Health. She is experienced in working closely with professionals in Local Authorities, NHS, police and Courts.

Di is a trainer, a registered Social Worker and social care consultant across the public and voluntary sector, mostly in adult social care and domestic abuse.  She is experienced in working with partner agencies in Local Authorities, health, police and offender management services which has included the chairing of Safeguarding Adult Reviews.

 Aim:

The course aims to increase the knowledge of practitioners and managers who work with adults at risk in the purpose and function of a safeguarding enquiry, and to improve skills and confidence for conducting a safeguarding enquiry.

Who should apply?

The content is suitable for experienced staff involved with adults at risk who may be required to undertake or assist with a Safeguarding Enquiry on behalf of their organisation e.g. Care Home Managers, Housing Providers, Domiciliary Care Seniors and Managers, District Nurses. If you work within a Local Authority and are already involved in completing enquiries please refer to the Level 2 course.

Course Content:

  • The legal context of Safeguarding, including Making Safeguarding Personal, The Care Act 2014 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • The purpose and aim of a Safeguarding Enquiry and how it should link to the outcomes identified by the individual
  • The role of the investigator
  • Completing an enquiry – information gathering, consideration of capacity, communicating with the individual, families and perpetrators
  • How to investigate in conjunction with other procedures including HR processes or police enquiries
  • How to escalate a concern if the initial enquiry appears to be more high risk
  • Professional challenge when it appears that referrals are not responded to in the way expected
  • Report writing using the TSAB template
  • Providing evidence at a Safeguarding meeting

Entry Requirements:

Staff will be expected to have relevant prior training (i.e. in Safeguarding Adults, MCA), at level 1 and 2, prior to attending this course. Completion of the TSAB Safeguarding Adults Awareness workbook and The Mental Capacity Act & Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards workbook will meet this requirement.

Please note that submitting a form does not guarantee a place, however we suggest that you provisionally book the date in your diary. These training sessions are usually oversubscribed and therefore allocation of places will be determined on a number of factors. Please ensure that you provide as much detail as possible on the ‘why you want to attend’ section of the form.

We will aim to send confirmation of your place as soon as possible. If you are unsuccessful you will be informed and your name may be added to a waiting list for this specific date.

Our courses are free to attend, however we do limit the number of places that we offer to ensure that all delegates have the opportunity to participate during the session, so if your place is confirmed and you are no longer able to attend please inform the Business Unit by email as soon as possible so that we have the chance to offer your place to another delegate . Any cancellations must be received by email no later than 11.30pm on Monday 16th 2022.  Cancellation after this date or failure to attend on the day will result in a £50 charge.
